The Cattle

This is where it gets exciting. We were both raised with cattle, and both have “somewhat” strong opinions on breed preference, proper handling techniques, and just about everything else regarding the cattle business.

Our cattle are Simmental/Angus cross. Every chance Heather gets, the Angus percentage is increased, while Charles watches closely that as much Simmental is kept in the herd as possible.

Thankfully, we do agree that we want to raise cattle of exceptional quality, and we are blessed to live in a part of the country that is environmentally suited to cattle production.

We strive to retain heifers that will be moderate framed, heavy milking cows that last more than 10 years. We want our cows to wean a 630-pound steer calf every fall that will grow well post-weaning and hang a high yielding and marbling carcass.

Our beef is raised on grass with its mother. After being weaned, calves are typically turned back out on pasture or crop aftermath until they are nearly one year old. They are then put in our feedlot, and finished on a corn, soybean meal, silage and ground hay diet, with mineral and salt readily available. Our kids regularly help feed, and provide countless educational seminars to the fat cattle while standing in the bunks snacking on their grain.

Our beef is available for processing through most western South Dakota butcher shops. We offer select number of head as wholes, halves or quarters each year, and encourage you to contact us as soon as possible if you would like on that list. We also plan to have individual retail cuts for sale on this site in the near future.
